The First Moscow State Medical University named after I. M. Sechenov (Sechenov University) is the largest and oldest medical university in Russia, leading its history since 1758.
Nowadays, Sechenov University is the major medical educational and scientific institution in Russia aimed at training, certification and postgraduate studies of physicians and pharmacists promoting thus further advance of medical science and healthcare domestically and on a global scale.
The name of the Russian physiologist Ivan Mikhailovich Sechenov has been bearing since 1955.
Full name: Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education First Moscow State Medical University named after I. M. Sechenov of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (Sechenov University).
Currently, the rector of the University of Sechenov is Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Petr Vitalevich Glybochko.
Sechenov University is a large educational complex for training, retraining, certification and advanced training of medical and pharmaceutical personnel. Fundamental search and applied scientific research, the provision of highly qualified medical assistance to the population, and the promotion of medicine and pharmacy are closely related to the educational process. The university heads the teaching and methodical association of medical and pharmaceutical universities in Russia.
Currently, Sechenov University has 4 faculties and 15 institutes that are structural subdivisions of Sechenov University (including 5 institutes of the Scientific and Technological Park of Biomedicine), as well as a foreign branch located in Baku.
Medical Faculty (Dean – Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Prof. Marina Arkadyevna Kinkulkina). The founding date of the medical faculty is considered to be 1758, the year when classes began at the medical faculty of the Imperial Moscow University (now MSU). In 1930, the medical faculty left the Moscow State University, forming the 1st MMI, and became known as treatment-and-prophylactic. In 1969, from the evening faculty created in 1959, the 2nd medical faculty was founded, as a result of which the medical preventive faculty became the 1st medical faculty. In 1998, the 1st and 2nd medical faculty were merged into the current medical faculty. Currently includes 49 departments;
Medical and Preventive Faculty (Dean – Academician RAMTN, Doctor of Medicine, Prof. Yuri Vladimirovich Nesvizhsky). In 1930, with the creation of the 1st Moscow Medical Institute, a new sanitary-preventive faculty was formed. In 1935 it was renamed as sanitary and hygienic, and in 1992 – as medical and preventive. This faculty, which trains sanitary doctors (hygienists and epidemiologists), became the first such faculty in the history of world medical education. Now consists of 13 departments;
Faculty of Pediatrics (Dean – Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medicine, Prof. Ekaterina I. Alekseeva). Opened June 19, 2010, at the moment in the faculty 7 departments;
Faculty of pre-university education (Dean – PhD. B., Assoc. Prof. Marina V. Kozar). It includes the Center for Pre-University Profile and Career Guidance Training “Medical-Biological Lyceum”, created on October 19, 2010 on the basis of Lyceum No. 1535 in Moscow. The faculty conducts courses on the additional educational program “Preparing for university entrance”.

The largest training center for management training in public health, organization, management and health economics. Since 2014, the Institute has had the status of a WHO Collaborating Center for training health policy makers in the area of prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases. Includes the Graduate School of Health Management (HSSC);
Institute of Medical Parasitology, Tropical and Transmissible Diseases. E. I. Martsinovsky (director – Dr. M. N. Lukashev). Founded on August 30, 1920;
Research Institute of Uronephrology and Human Reproductive Health. Created in September 2010 at the initiative of the rector Peter Vitalyevich Glybochko. Together with the oldest urology clinic in Russia (founded in 1866) and the Department of Urology, the Research Institute of Uronephrology forms a unique research, educational and medical structure;
Institute of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication (Director – Ph.D., Professor, Irina Y. Markovina);
Institute of Vocational Education (Director – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Prof. Evgenia V. Shih). It was established on December 1, 2013 with the aim of organizing activities to improve the skills and retraining of medical personnel. Includes 24 pulpits;
Institute of Sociology, Psychology and Humanities (Director – Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Social Sciences, Prof. Andrey Veniaminovich Reshetnikov). Consists of 4 departments;
Institute of Dentistry (Director – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Prof. Irina M. Makeeva). The starting date of the history is considered to be April 27, 2001, when the dental faculty of MMA was established. November 16, 2017 signed an order to establish the Institute of Dentistry. The Faculty of Dentistry became a structural unit of the Institute of Dentistry at the Sechenov University and was transformed into the Educational Department of the Institute. It has 7 specialized departments;
Institute of Pharmacy (director – Ph.D., professor, Galina V. Ramenskaya). In 1934, it was founded as the Moscow Pharmaceutical Institute (MFI). From 1952 to 1958, the MFI built the building of the physical building, later it received permission to build a chemical building, which was completed by the 1st MMI. On September 4, 1958, the MFI was merged with the 1st IM Sechenov MMI and became its pharmaceutical faculty. In 2016, the Faculty of Pharmacy was reorganized into the Institute of Pharmacy and Translational Medicine as part of the The First Moscow State Medical University named after I. M. Sechenov (Sechenov University). In 2018, the Institute of Pharmacy and Translational Medicine was reorganized into two separate institutes: the Institute of Pharmacy and the Institute of Translational Medicine and Biotechnology, which became part of the Scientific and Technical Park of Biomedicine. The Institute of Pharmacy currently consists of 10 departments;

Biomedical science and technology park is a high-tech and knowledge-intensive interdisciplinary cluster of Sechenov University. It is a consortium comprising 5 institutions:
Institute of Molecular Medicine;
Institute of Regenerative Medicine;
Institute of Personalized Medicine;
Institute of Translational Medicine and Biotechnology;
Institute of Bionic Technology and Engineering.
The university enrolls almost over 15 thousand students from Russia and foreign countries. They receive training in full-time, evening and correspondence courses, including with elements of distance education.
Over 2,500 of academic headcount at 8 faculties encompassing 150 chairs implement training in 14 specialties covering more than 14,000 students and about 15,000 postgraduates practicing full-time, part-time and evening attendance, as well as extramural educational solutions. Hundreds of higher degree theses are defended annually.
85% of the University tutors have higher degrees. The staff includes 4 fellows and 3 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 64 fellows and 38 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS), 3 fellows and 1 corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Education, about 70 Honored Scientists of the Russian Federation and over 100 State Prize winners.
The University incorporates 69 educational venues, 19 hospitals with over 3,000 beds, 7 research institutes and 5 RAMS R&D units, more than 30 laboratories, the greatest medical library in Europe, botanic garden, and many other facilities ensuring academic excellence resulting in powerful research and innovation advances along with cutting-edge medical care practices.
Since 2010 the Sechenov University has been headed by Prof. Petr V. Glybochko, MD, Corresponding Member of the RAMS, Member of the European Association of Urology, Vice-President of the Russian Association of Urologists, Chairman of the Education and Methodics Association of Medical and Pharmaceutical HEIs, owning 17 patents, the author of over 450 scientific studies, etc.
