Before the universities of Russia, there was an acute problem – how, preserving the historical traditions of the higher medical education system, its principles and teaching methodology, integrate into the system of a single educational space in accordance with European requirements?

The staff of the department on the basis of old academic traditions, skillfully combining a variety of pedagogical techniques, introduces the most advanced communication technologies into the educational process.
Independent educational and clinical base, highly qualified personnel potential allow the department to perform a large amount of educational, educational, research and expert work, embodying the basic principle of pedagogy: teaching students through theory and practice.
The main directions of the research activity of the department are the development of methods and technologies for identifying the identity of unidentified perished in conditions of mass entry; determination of age based on quantitative histological examination of internal organs and bone tissue; development of morphological criteria for the forensic diagnosis of acute drug poisoning and drug addiction; determination of intravital and limitation of mechanical injury; forensic diagnosis of chronic subdural hematomas, improvement of the technology of teaching forensic medicine. The greatest attention is currently paid to the issues of forensic medical examination of living persons.
Yu.I. Pigolkin created a new scientific direction in the forensic identification of a person: the use of quantitative age-related morphology to establish the biological age of a person. His research on the assessment of age-related changes in bone tissue, in which a fundamentally new set of morphometric, densitometric and planimetric methods using computer technology is used, is a priority in forensic medicine.
Under the guidance and counseling of Yu.I. Pigolkin was defended 24 candidate and 13 doctoral theses. The results of the research are reflected in new medical technologies devoted to the forensic medical diagnosis of thermal injury, acute and chronic alcohol intoxication, the study of the brain in acute blood loss, etc.
Scientific developments of research activities of the staff of the Department of Forensic Medicine are embedded in the educational process of the Department of Forensic Medicine of the First Moscow State Medical University. Sechenov, partner departments of Russia and the near abroad (Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan), as well as the expert practice of the Bureau of Forensic Medicine of most regions of Russia.
