The Department of Neonatology, Pediatric Faculty, by the decision of the Academic Council of the FMSMU named after I.M. Sechenov organized in 2012. The first cycle of advanced training of doctors in the specialty “Neonatology” was held in January 2013. The clinical base of the department is the Federal State Budgetary Institution National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology named after Academician V.I. Kulakov Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. Classes are held in newborn departments, resuscitation and intensive care, pathology of newborns and premature babies, neonatal surgery, scientific advisory pediatric department, as well as in the simulation and training center of this institution.

Priority scientific directions of the department are:
• issues of improving the treatment and care of very premature babies
• intensive care for newborns
• neonatal nutriciology
• diagnosis, prevention and treatment of congenital, perinatal and nosocomial infections
• diagnosis and management of children with congenital metabolic disorders
• follow-up of children born with a body weight less than 1500g

The research work of the department is constantly expanding.
Department staff are actively involved in organizing and conducting major scientific forums and educational congresses on neonatology. All employees are active members of the Russian Society of Neonatologists.
