Created in 1971 for students of the faculty of advanced training of teachers of medical and pharmaceutical universities and for graduate students FMSMU named after I.M. Sechenov (future teachers), the department went a short and at the same time eventful way, linking its fate with the improvement of domestic medical and pharmaceutical education, with the introduction of scientific psychology in medical education.

The creation of the department was preceded by a search for forms and methods for improving the psychological and pedagogical qualifications of teachers, during which the vice-rector for academic affairs prof. I.A.Sychennikov and the dean of FPKP prof. MR Sapin from 1967 organized pedagogical readings, to which lecturers from the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR were invited. In 1971, a decision was made to organize his own department, which the university administration was entrusted with the task of heading KS Mitin, Doctor of Medicine. Having worked for more than a year in this position, Kirill Mitin staffed the department with professional psychologists (3 graduates of the faculty of psychology at Moscow State University; in 1971 was the first graduation of professional psychologists in our country), a teacher and a doctor (there were 5 teachers in the department). Retired to Moscow Institute of Dentistry. In the same period, the main directions of the department’s work were formulated.

After the arrival in 1973 of a new head of the department, Ph.D. Yu.M.Orlova (who headed it for 22 years), the department has become a recognized scientific and methodological center for the improvement of domestic higher medical and pharmaceutical education.

On the day of the 35th anniversary of the department, Academician of the RAO A V.Petrovsky wrote in his address (this address literally on the eve of the academician’s death, the department’s staff regard as his will): “Dear colleagues, I sincerely congratulate you on the anniversary of the Department of Pedagogy and Medical Psychology! 35 years of work, which is noticeable far beyond universities, gives you reason to be proud of the results achieved … “. Employees of the department with confidence look to the future, offering doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists new projects of psychological educational programs, are enthusiastically involved in the preparation of the FMSMU named after I.M. Sechenov professional psychologists are preparing for their 45th anniversary (in 2016).
