RULE 1. WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP FREQUENTLY
Clean and disinfect the surfaces with detergents.
Hand hygiene is a vital measure against the spread of flu and coronavirus disease. Hand washing with soap removes viruses. If you cannot wash your hands with soap, use alcohol-based or disinfecting wipes.
Regular cleaning and disinfection of the surfaces (tabletops, door handles, chairs, gadgets etc.) removes viruses.
RULE 2. MAINTAIN A DISTANCE AND FOLLOW ETIQUETTE RULES
Viruses get spread by airborne transmission (during sneezing and coughing), which is why you should keep a distance of at least one metre from an infected person. Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. Flu and coronavirus disease both spread those ways.
Wear a mask or use other makeshift protective means to reduce the risk of disease.
Cover your mouth and nose with disposable tissues, discarding them after use.
You can reduce the risk of infection by avoiding nonessential trips and crowded areas.
RULE 3. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
Healthy lifestyle makes you more resistant to infection. Maintain healthy habits, including sufficient sleep, consumption of food products rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals, as well as physical exercises.
RULE 4. WEAR A MEDICAL MASK TO PROTECT YOUR RESPIRATORY ORGANS
Of special importance among other preventive means are medical masks that can limit the spread of a virus.
Medical masks should be used:
– when visiting crowded areas or using public transport during the outbreaks of acute respiratory viral infections;
– when taking care of a person with an acute respiratory viral infection;
– when contacting a person with symptoms of an acute respiratory viral infection;
– in the case of risks of other airborne infections.
HOW TO WEAR A MASK?
Medical masks come in different designs. They can be either disposable or reusable. Some masks can last for two, four or six hours. Their price varies depending on how their layers are treated. However, you cannot wear the same mask all the time: otherwise, you can infect yourself. It does not actually matter which side of the mask you leave facing inwards.
So as to keep yourself safe, you should wear the mask properly:
– the mask should be fastened carefully, tightly covering mouth and nose without any gaps;
– avoid touching the mask as you remove it; otherwise, thoroughly wash your hands with soap or alcohol-based sanitiser;
– replace the mask with a new dry one as soon as it gets damp or wet;
– do not use a disposable mask again;
– discard the mask immediately in a bin.
If you take care of an infected person, discard the mask immediately after you stop contacting this person. Thoroughly wash your hands immediately after removing it.
Wear a mask while visiting crowded areas, taking public transport or taking care of an infected person.
Do not wear a mask outdoors since fresh air is good for your health.
As health professionals remind us, wearing a mask is not enough to fully protect you against disease. You should wear it in combination with other preventive measures.
RULE 5. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I HAVE SYMPTOMS OF FLU / CORONAVIRUS DISEASE?
Stay home and contact the doctor urgently.
Follow your doctor’s instructions, stay in bed and drink plenty of liquids.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF FLU / CORONAVIRUS DISEASE?
Fever, chills, headache, weakness, nasal congestion, cough, dyspnoea, myalgia, conjunctivitis. Symptoms of gastric distress (in some cases): nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS?
The leading complication is viral pneumonia. It involves rapid deterioration of the patient’s health; many patients develop respiratory failure within 24 hours, requiring urgent support with mechanical ventilation. If started rapidly, treatment can reduce the severity of the illness.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF A FAMILY MEMBER HAS SYMPTOMS OF FLU / CORONAVIRUS DISEASE?
Call in a doctor.
Isolate the family member in a separate room. If possible, stay at a distance of at least one metre from the sick person.
Limit any contact between the sick person and their family, especially children, elderly people and people with chronic diseases.
Air the rooms frequently.
Keep everything clean, washing and disinfecting the surfaces with detergents as often as possible.
Wash your hands with soap frequently.
While taking care of the sick family member, cover your mouth and nose with a mask or other protective means (handkerchief, scarf etc). Only one family member should take care of the sick person.
