Department of Faculty Surgery number 1 of the FMSMU named after I.M. Sechenov is the oldest surgical school in Russia. The department has been counting its history since 1846, when, on the initiative of prof. F. I. Inozemtsev at the medical faculty of Moscow University reorganization of the teaching of surgery was carried out. In the course of the reform carried out at Moscow University, new departments of faculty and hospital surgery were organized (for more, see the history section).

From the moment of foundation and up to the present, medical students are trained at the department, postgraduate education in the specialty “surgery” for doctors is organized, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies are being actively developed and introduced into clinical practice.

More than 400 students of IV and VI courses of the medical faculty and the faculty of military training annually study at the department.

The training of doctors in the specialty “surgery” is conducted during training in clinical internship, residency and postgraduate studies on a budgetary and commercial basis (for more, see educational activities).

Traditionally, the priority scientific tasks of the clinic are the issues of surgical treatment of diseases of the abdominal cavity and chest, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, surgical infection.
Human resources

The walls of the department will remember the lectures of such eminent scholars as N. V. Sklifosovsky, S. P. Fedorov, A. A. Bobrov, N. N. Burdenko, V. V. Kovanov, N. N. Elansky, M. I. Kuzin .
Currently, the department is headed by Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences A.F. Chernousov.

The staff of the department has a huge scientific potential: 45% of teachers are doctors of medical sciences, 55% are candidates of medical sciences.

The educational activity of the department is carried out on the basis of the clinic of faculty surgery to them. N. N. Burdenko FMSMU named after I.M. Sechenov.

The department has five training rooms and six showrooms, located above the operating rooms, specially designed to show students various surgical interventions.

In the educational process, the possibilities of modern means of presenting audiovisual information are widely used: lectures and classes are accompanied by demonstrations of training videos and multimedia presentations.

The department has a comfortable lecture hall, equipped with a multimedia projector, stationary and radio microphones, high-quality audio system.

At the clinical base of the department, students of II, III and IV courses of the First MGMU named after I.M. Sechenov.
