Department of Faculty Therapy №2

The Department of Faculty Therapy No. 2 of the Medical Faculty is one of the oldest therapeutic departments of the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov – was founded in 1939.

The chair is headed by the director of the therapeutic clinic of the UKB No. 4, the honored doctor of the Russian Federation, doctor of medical sciences, professor Valery Ivanovich Podzolkov. Being a graduate of the I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Institute, in his work he considers it a priority to preserve and increase the best traditions of medical science and pedagogy inherent in our University. Valery Ivanovich is a well-known cardiologist, a member of the board of the All-Russian Scientific Society of Cardiology, who actively promotes the latest global medical advances in clinical practice and teaching processes. He is the author of more than 500 scientific papers published in Russia and abroad. Under his leadership, teaching at the department are 2 professors, doctors of medical sciences, 12 associate professors, candidates of medical sciences, 4 assistants, candidates of medical sciences.

The priority directions in the department’s scientific activities are: the study of the problems of diagnosing and treating arterial hypertension, gender problems of hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, the study of microcirculatory disorders in metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus in combination with coronary heart disease, and the study of pathogenetic issues of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, features of the course of coronary heart disease and chronic heart failure in the presence of combined pathology.
As part of the training in the specialty “medical business”, the department annually trains more than 1,300 students of the 3rd and 4th courses of the medical faculty, 100 part-time students, 100 foreign students, for whom lectures and practical classes in the course of faculty therapy are taught in English language.

The medical work of the Department of Faculty Therapy №2 is carried out on the basis of the University Clinical Hospital №4, which has three therapeutic departments with a bed capacity of 100 beds, a department of functional and ultrasound diagnostics, CT and X-ray rooms, and a laboratory of radioisotope diagnostic methods.
A large variety of clinical pathology, often combined with each other, requires intense consultative work of staff and provides a large and high-quality clinical practice for students, clinical residents and interns. Adequate hospital bed capacity and a wide range of therapeutic diseases ensures that students complete summer clinical practice.
