Currently, the department carries out the educational process on the cycle of general professional disciplines of the federal component of state educational standards of higher professional education in the disciplines of specialties 060101 – General Medicine, 060104 – Medical and Preventive Business, 060105 – Dentistry and 060108 – Pharmacy. Students of the medical-prophylactic faculty also study at the department the discipline of their specialty – radiation hygiene.

The main task of studying hygiene with the fundamentals of human ecology at the medical and dental faculties is the formation of competence to apply in the medical diagnostic process an algorithm of hygienic diagnostics of changes in the state of health of an individual or a population with adverse effects of environmental factors.

The tasks of general hygiene at the medical-preventive faculty are the mastering of the scientific basis of hygiene and methods of hygienic studies of environmental objects. The study of the disciplines “Military Hygiene” and “Radiation Hygiene” provides for the formation of professional competencies of graduates of the specialty “Medical and preventive care”

At the pharmaceutical faculty, the main attention is paid to the connection of environmental factors with the organization of sanitary-hygienic and anti-epidemic regime in pharmacies and at the enterprises of the pharmaceutical industry.

The department is one of the first in the FMSMU named after I.M. Sechenov began to introduce programmed control and elements of programmed instruction. For eleven years, students of the medical faculty passed a written test exam. Since 1989, a score-rating system has been applied to the department for the final certification of students.
