The Department of Human Ecology and Environmental Hygiene was established in 1996 on the basis of the departments of communal hygiene (founded in 1932) and food hygiene (founded in 1931). Professor Korolyov Anatoly Alexandrovich, who headed the department until 2005, was elected the head of the department.

In 2002, in connection with the reorganization of the department of occupational hygiene with the course of hygiene of children and adolescents, the disciplines of occupational hygiene (taught since 1926) and hygiene of children and teenagers (taught since 1926) were included in the department of human ecology and environmental hygiene.

From 2005 to the present, the Department of Human Ecology and Environmental Hygiene is headed by Onishchenko Gennady, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Chief Sanitary Doctor of the Russian Federation, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Education and Science.
The department is teaching 4 basic professional disciplines for students enrolled in the specialty 32.05.01 “medical and preventive work”: Communal Hygiene, Food Hygiene, Children’s Hygiene and Hygiene, Labor Hygiene for 5th and 6th year students, a block of disciplines for choice Applied Hygiene for students of the 6th course, as well as educational and industrial practices (including students’ research).

Currently, the department is also teaching human ecology for students studying in the specialty of Clinical Psychology (1st year), ecology for students studying in Bioengineering and Bioinformatics (3rd year) and labor protection and industrial sanitation. for students studying in the specialty “Biotechnology” (4 course).
