The department was organized by one of the first in the country in October 1966, its founders were Professor G. S. Yumashev, Associate Professor S. Z. Gorshkova, assistants TA A. Gladysheva, Yu.T. Kochetkov, M. N. Elizarov, L. L. Silin and others who made a great contribution to the development of national traumatology and orthopedics. The main feature of the teaching process was close interaction with practical activities.

At the moment it is the largest department in the country. The priority directions of the scientific and practical activity of the department are the treatment of diseases and injuries of the spine, large joints of the extremities, assistance to victims in emergency situations. Today, the department provides training for students in all leading faculties of the FMSMU named after I.M. Sechenov: medical, scientific, preventive medical, pediatric, pharmaceutical, higher nursing education. During the academic year, the total number of students exceeds 1000 people. The training of specialists is carried out in the following specialties: “medical business”, “medical and prophylactic business”, “pharmacy”, “sister business”. In addition, clinical interns, graduate students, and applicants from both Russia and from abroad are undergoing graduate training. Training rooms for students, lecture halls, and manipulation rooms are equipped at each clinical base. In teaching, modern means of practicing practical first-aid skills are used. The presentation material created by the staff of the department reflects not only the current state of medical science and practice, but also its own rich clinical experience. At the clinical bases of the department, not only curriculum classes are conducted, but also practical training for students of medical and pharmaceutical faculties.
